The Irian Jaya Carpet Python comes from the Merauke area of Irian Jaya. This area is centrally located along the south eastern coast of New Guinea. This is a small form of carpet python with a maximum length of about six feet, however, most are considerably smaller than this. My first breeding with this species a few years ago involved two 18 month old animals both slightly less than 4 feet long! | ||

This is an awesome carpet python who's popularity, I feel, has been over shadowed by that of the Jungle Carpet Python. At one to two years of age they can rival most jungles for color intensity and beauty. Babies hatch out an overall rust red, at 3 to 4 months of age they begin the transformation to adult coloration. Older adults animals darken slightly to earthy tones of yellow and brown some develop an orange wash along the lower sides of the body. | ![]() |

Irian Jaya Carpets are quite arboreal at all ages and will spend considerable time off the ground if provided with suitable branches or shelves. They are very hardy captives, good feeders and have calm dispositions. Irian Jaya Carpet Python are an exciting species to work with. They exhibit a great deal of variation in color and pattern, reaching sexual maturity at an early age, (with a steady feeding regime they can be bred at 18 months of age) with a few generations of selective breeding, there should be some stunningly beautiful snakes produced. As with jungles its not really possible to tell which babies will become outstanding adults, however, every clutch holds the potential for a few trophy animals. |
