Woma
(Aspidites Ramsayi)

omas are endemic to Australia, two distinct populations are known, one from the south western part of western Australia, reaching to the coast of the Indian Ocean. The other ranges in central Australia including the Northern Territory, South Australia and Queensland. Womas from this population are the only ones available to collectors in North America.

My Adult Female Woma

Womas are very unusual snakes, both in appearance and in behavior, they lack the familiar looking heat sensing pits that most python have this makes their heads look more like a colubrid than a python. They are medium sized python reaching about 7 to 8 feet in length. Womas are, without a doubt, the most laid back easy to handle snake on the face of the earth, more like picking up and holding a wet noodle than a python. At feeding time however, they become incredibly alert, fast and powerful constrictors.

Womas inhabit a very harsh environment, extremes of hot and cold, dry and wet, I am sure this is why they have adapted so well to captivity. Just ten years ago Womas were extremely rare in North American collections. Now, though still expensive, they are readily available.
